CARIBOU SONG

Written by Tomson Highway with music by Rick Sacks, Caribou Song tells the story of two Cree children in Canada's north who follow the caribou by dogsled with their family. When a herd of caribou thunders through their camp, the parents worry that their children have been trampled. Instead, the children find a way to magically embrace the spirit of the caribou. This adventure dance story for family audiences is a tale about the transformative nature of love and the power of the natural world.

Red Sky's inaugural production of Caribou Song (large orchestral version) was performed in February 2000 with the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra, then, notably with 70 musicians of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the Roy Thomson Hall in February 2002. A chamber version of Caribou Song has since toured to: Ottawa's National Arts Centre; Edmonton's Catalyst Theatre; Manitoba Theatre for Young People; John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington; Toronto's Soundstreams "Musicools" at the Isabel Bader Theatre; Arts and Culture Centres in Newfoundland and Labrador; Charles W. Stockey in Parry Sound; Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver; Algoma Fall Festival in Sault Ste Marie; Mashantucket Pequot Museum in Connecticut; Southwest University for Nationalities in China; Salurinn Concert Hall in Iceland; Murten Festival in Switzerland; and The Dreaming Festival in Australia.
